Tonight for just a little bit I would like to speak about finding joy. Finding joy in the gospel of Jesus Christ is important. Without joy life can be difficult and very miserable.
You remember, in a second chapter of second Nephi we are told that man is that he might have joy. Have you thought about that before? When we read in Moses, we learn a little bit more about how Adam felt about finding joy.
I'm going to read from chapter 5 in the book of Moses. Now this was after Adam and Eve began to bring forth children. Of course they have already been cast out of the garden of Eden. Now if you think about the Garden of Eden, perhaps you think, the garden of Eden is the place, where you should have real joy.
They were in God's presence, they didn't have to work, they didn't know good and evil. But it was after they were cast out of the garden of Eden that Adam truly began to understand joy. You remember that Adam was offering sacrifices and an angel of the Lord appeared unto him and asked him, why he was sacrificing.
Adam's response was: 'I know not, save the Lord commanded me.' And then the angel began to teach Adam. And it says in verse 9: 'And in that day the Holy Ghost fell upon Adam, which beareth record of the Father and the Son, saying: I am the Only Begotten of the Father from the beginning, henceforth and forever, that as thou hast fallen thou mayest be redeemed, and all mankind, even as many as will.'
And in that day Adam blessed God and was filled, and began to prophesy concerning all the families of the earth, saying: 'Blessed be the name of God, for because of my transgression my eyes are opened, and in this life I shall have joy, and again in the flesh I shall see God.'
So it wasn't until he had been cast out of the garden, he'd offered sacrifice, he'd began to bear children with his wife, and the angel taught him, that the Holy Ghost descended upon him. And after the Holy Ghost descended upon him, his eyes were opened and he realized that he could now find joy.
And then Eve said this in verse 11: 'Were it not for our transgression we never should have had seed, and never should have known good and evil, and the joy of our redemption, and the eternal life which God giveth unto all the obedient.'
What I've learned from this scripture is that even though the life was now more difficult for Adam and Eve, even thought now there was sorrow and suffering, there was pain, there was hard work, there were family dynamics and family problems... Even with all of that they've realized, that now they can find joy. And that joy comes through the knowledge that they can be redeemed and returned to Heavenly Father.
My dear brothers and sisters, we know, that life can be difficult. We know that within families there can be trials and challenges. Every family has those trials and challenges. We know that you work hard, work long hours, you study hard at school. We know that at times it is difficult to provide for your families. But even with this life challenges, if we remember, that because of the redemption, offered by our savior Jesus Christ, that we can return to our Heavenly Father, it should bring great joy to us.
Sometimes we need to pause from our lives and look up and realize the blessings that are countless. How blessed we are that we have a knowledge of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. How blessed we are to have a fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ? How blessed we are to know, that Jesus Christ suffered and died for each of us?
That through his atoning sacrifice that we can be clean and pure again. That through the grace of his atonement that we can have power given to us to make it through this challenging times. Is there not great cause, my brother and sisters, to have joy? Can you not look up from your daily cares and see the great blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It brings me great joy. It brings me joy to know that I'm sealed to my wife for time and all eternity. It brings me great joy to know that my children are sealed to my wife and I. And no matter how difficult life becomes, I can find hope in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
It brings me peace, it brings me joy. I want you to know that the area presidency has joy. We have challenges - yes. But we have joy and hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is our prayers in area presidency that in the coming year we will continue to find joy in this gospel. That we will continue to love, and to elevate, and to simplify. To strengthen strive and invite. And I know that as we do so, we will find joy in this gospel. We love you, and we are grateful for the opportunity to serve with you. And I say this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
